Dominican Republic Spring Break: Day 6

Wednesday, 3/9/16 - Clinics, Children, and Coconuts

Today was another morning to watch the sun rise, this time less cloudy than yesterday.  Also, Alexa decided to let the cat out that lives outside our house and ended up getting scratched and bitten.  It's just a small kitten and I feel bad that it had been locked up since we got here.  Even though I knew going in that animals are treated differently here, it still can be hard to see them suffer or lack human touch.
After waiting around for awhile in the morning, we finally left for our 2nd clinic day.  We had a beautiful drive up the mountains.  Once we got to the clinic, I worked in the pharmacy, helping to fill and pass out prescriptions.  It was a little boring, but I knew that even my small role counting pills was making a contribution.
After we were done at the clinic, we headed back to the house.  I then headed with a group to pick up the kids from preschool.  One of my favorite moments was when a bunch of shoes were stuck out for me to tie and then all of a sudden there were arms around my neck.  I turned around to see a cute smiling face with outstretched arms wanting to be held.  Moments like those are so precious.
Once we returned from dropping off the kiddos, we ate yummy Dominican food and played five crowns.  One of our drivers also cut open a coconut from the tree by our house.  Drinking the coconut water was so yummy.  A couple of us also scooped some of the coconut meat out to eat after the liquid was gone.  It was delicious!
Later, we visited the hospital that Dr. Angel runs.  We went for a tour and got to ask Dr. Angel a few questions about how the hospital operates.  After our tour, we went to Adam's for a chili dinner and took a walk to an ice cream shop.  I had a delicious passion fruit bar.  The walk back to Adam's was peaceful.  The evenings in the DR are cool and beautiful.
We had reflection once we got back from Adam's and then most of us went to bed right after.  It's hard to believe that tomorrow is our last clinic day and then Friday will be spent traveling back to the capitol to catch a red eye back to New York and from there a flight to Chicago, followed by a 3 hour drive back to campus.
