Dominican Republic Spring Break: Day 2
Saturday 3/5/16 - A day of travel and tremendous excitement
On Saturday morning, bright and early, our group changed into matching t-shirts, and heading off on the shuttle to the Chicago airport. Tremendous excitement rushed through me as I showered that morning. I was so anxious for the incredible journey awaiting me.
The rest of the day consisted mainly of going through security and waiting around in airports. During our 5-hour layover in JKF airport, we took plenty of walks around the airport and grabbed our last dinner in the states for awhile. Nick, Kara, and I also managed to go to another terminal and then have to go through security again. Tim came to our rescue to go through security with us. Before going back through security, however, we went outside and set foot on the sidewalk outside the airport and breathed our first New York air.
Once we returned from our airport adventure, I had time to spare for one last phone call with my parents. It was crazy knowing that the next time I would hear their voices would be in the same airport, days later, and with plenty of stories to share. Their sweet words were just what I needed, as not long after I got off the phone, we lined up and boarded the plane to Santo Domingo.
If I had been asked a year ago if I were going on this trip, I feel as though I never would have imagined it being a reality or having such a strong desire to explore and serve in a place unknown to me. But I couldn't of asked for a better group to set off with. Their smiling faces kept me feeling safe, sane, and excited.
We arrived in Santo Domingo between 11pm and midnight. We gathered our bags and headed through customs, too excited to feel the exhaustion yet. Walking through the doors of the airport, we were greeted with open arms by Adam. We met our drivers and they threw our stuff into two trucks and took us to a resort for the night. Little did we know, but these drivers would become some of our greatest friends and provide some of our favorite memories of this whole experience.
