Tuesday: mining and lumber activity in the Keweenaw

For this journal as I stood outside I tried to picture the mining and lumber activity that once existed in the Keweenaw. Not long after going outside my senses picked up on what my mind was telling me to picture. And as I looked at the pine trees outside my home I could smell the wood as it was being chopped down. I could hear the falling down of the trees as they were being logged. I could hear the machinery as it hauled logs and I could feel the emotions of the workers. The dedication they had to getting the job down and feeding their families.
It was a little harder for me to picture the times of mining in the Keweenaw, but as I looked at the copper in my yard I soon could feel those times too. I could picture the rock and could hear the sounds of the machinery. I saw the faces of all of those workers hard at work mining. I also pictured caves, drilling, and those hard hats with the lights on them...what are those called?
Anyway my point is after picturing the times of mining and lumber activity in the Keweenaw I really got a sense of what it was like back then. I could smell, feel, and hear the hustle and bustle of both of these acitivites.
I also think that if we try hard enough we can imagine any time period. And right now my mind is going back to the 20's....a picture of a flapper is fluttering into my mind this very second.

  1. It BLOWS my mind to think about those times! I live in a 100+ year old house, and it is hard to imagine that someone lived there during the mining era. Someone who probably worked in the mines. Crazy!

I love seeing the old pictures. I want to go to the archives at MTU one day, and then check out all my house during olden times... just curious, you know?
